Reasons to give a Yes to the new Constitution

Santiago de Cuba, January 24th,- The citizens of Santiago de Cuba have experienced lately revealing moments for the future of the country and their people by taking part in the popular consultation of the New Constitution. It was approved by the National Assembly of People´ s Power and it must be ratified in a referendum next February 24th, a very important historical date.

The process has been one of detailed analysis, enriching arguments, proposals and important contributions.  It shows valuable experiences to adapt our main legislation to our historical moment and current conditions. It will define the fate of the country we want to build.

People are aware of the huge responsibility when getting their final say in the national referendum due to the dimension of the main law of the Republic. This is the most important legal and political text of the nation. The State will lay on it.

In that same sense, the reasons that the present generations have of contributing to its elaboration are also huge.

This sovereign process has shown the strength of the Cuban Revolution and the people´s power. They developed a truly democratic and unusual process nowadays. This was due to the fact that opinions, contributions, suggestions, and even doubts and negative comments about the Constitution were taken into account.

Cuba is well prepared to go to a successful referendum after a total reformation of the Constitution that was approved on February 24th, 1976 with the support of the 97.7 percent of the citizens that were consulted. Its updating is related to the main transformations of the country, the agreements of the VI and VII Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba, the predictable future and the content of international treaties and protocols signed by our country.

There are certainly  quite important proposals related to the political, economic and social aspects. A lot has been consulted with specialists of the legal field and professionals of the Law.

Rights of Equality, which appear in the document, have been a hot topic. They are better expressed than in the previous documents that were only referred to: skin color, gender and race. It now includes banning discrimination based on gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnic origin and disability.

Moreover, municipalities have been another important topic among the population. They will acquire a biggest importance when recognizing their autonomy. It will be based on the interests of the nation. Therefore, there will be a better chance to improve local development and a better resource management.

These topics have led to gatherings, exchanges among people at home, workplaces, schools, and public spaces. There are great expectations of prosperity for Cuba and Cubans.

According to the jurist Solanch Sanz, we have the responsibility to preserve rights that are already victories in our nation. However, there are also some challenges for organizations such as the Federation of Cuban Women that should influence women to have a better legal culture and to be better prepared to understand and participate in order to have an education of respect, social integration and tolerance.

She also expressed that the right thing to do is to give a Yes to the new Constitution. That is in accordance with the history of the Cuban people. It should be done in favor of socialism, Cuba, our homeland, Fidel and our sons and daughters.

Aleyda Torres, a citizen of this city, said that each woman and man of this land has a great amount of arguments that are in favor of the historical legitimacy to give a Yes to the new legislation next February 24th.

Finally, the Hygiene and Epidemiology graduate Dayneris Danger made reference to the fact that with the purpose of writing the best Constitution that Cuba deserves, the people discussed the draft in a deep way. Now, they have the responsibility to ratify the vote given by the Deputies of the Cuban Parliament as true representatives of our people.
